2014 witnessed an Ebola outbreak in many West African countries including Nigeria. Four patients lost their lives in Nigeria and there was a national alert by the Nigerian Government through the Federal Ministry of Health to all states in Nigeria for an immediate sensitization of its citizens on preventive measures to curtail its spread.
The Health Support Initiative (HSI) was the first NGO in Edo State and in South South geopolitical zone consisting of six states in Nigeria to embark on an immediate Ebola Sensitization to rural communities. Several communities were visited with donation of infra-red thermometers to several health centres.
The spread of the Ebola Virus Disease was curtailed in Nigeria due to the prompt response of the Nigerian government and the collaboration with several NGO’s including the HSI. The efforts of the Nigerian government has received commendations from the international community including the World Health Organization (WHO).
